WOOARGHHH!…..and welcome to Where Legends Live!! – A history of metal told through the pages of Kerrang!

That’s right folks! This blog site is dedicated to once again tearing open the pages of Kerrang! Magazine, starting right back at Issue 1 from June 1981. We wil revisit this key piece of rock n roll history, with a main Blog that delves into each issue – all the historic news and gossip – and at the same time bring you some of the choice Kuts! of the time – from the NWOBHM through Thrash and Glam and everything else!

A celebration rather than a critique, we will share with you some classic bands of the time, some of whom went on to great things and others that fizzled out and died (quite literally in some cases!). We’ll share with you reviews of the time and bring you updated info and our own thoughts on some oft-forgotten albums. Remember ‘View From The Bar!‘, ‘Mayhem!‘, ‘Strictly For Konnoisseurs!” and ‘Penpals!‘? We will bring you a warmingly nostalgic overview of each issue, supported by in-depth journeys into some of the more ‘interesting’ aspects of the magazine. For those of you who remember Issue 1 and for those of you who came to the party much later in the day, it will cast that same spell over you that it did at the time.

Where Legends Live! Playlists, YouTube Channels and Social Media pages will also bring you easy to access collections linked to each issue. Klassic Kerrang! features such as the ‘HM Top 100’ and ‘Striktly For Konnoisseurs’ will have their own dedicated Playlists, and for every Issue we will select the songs that bring to life the featured stories. Special ‘Legends Revisited’ playlists will bring you a ‘go to’ collection of songs from artists that we feel deserve the ‘Legends’ badge of honour. You’ll never need to make another Playlist for as long as the Legends Live!!

So jump aboard metal-heads!! Embrace the greatest rock and metal magazine of all time…often copied, never beaten. Where Legends Live!…….

It’s likely to be the greatest story ever told!

A brief history of Kerrang!

Kerrang! is the world’s number one rock and metal magazine, never bettered, never defeated, and still going strong after 40 years!

It first appeared on UK newsstands on June 6 1981 (‘D-Day’ of course, in this case the ‘D’ stands for ‘Distortion’…), and it watched on as Sounds music paper – from where Kerrang! had started as a one-off supplement – disappeared in 1991. It launched in the US and then across the world, and became the best-selling music weekly in the UK in the early 2000s.

Supported by popular radio and video platforms, spawning respected awards and highly regarded compilation albums, Kerrang! has broken and championed some of the most important movements in heavy music over the past four decades – the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Thrash, Glam, Grunge, Industrial, Nu Metal, Emo, Metalcore and everything else in between…

Kerrang! has (unsurprisingly, given its lifespan) gone through many changes of editors and owners, with controversy and complaints as constant companions, but has always confounded its critics by going from strength to strength, refusing to live completely in the past, while always respecting its history.

In 2017, Kerrang! was acquired by Mixmag Media, moving the title into a digital format, as well as continuing the paper edition.  During this period legendary Editor-In-Chief Phil Alexander returned as Global Creative Director.

So while being passed from generation to generation, from Geoff Barton’s enthusiastic DIY beginnings, to today’s confident, established formats, for many of us all across the world, Kerrang! has always been our bible, our touch-point with our tribe, and our friend.  It is Where Legends Live!!!
